Smart energy saving tips for smaller spaces

Sandton residents living in smaller spaces such as flats, high rise buildings and complexes can contribute greatly to saving electricity.

They are also in a better position to save electricity living in relatively confined spaces without having swimming pools, gardens and outdoor lighting to worry about.

Those who have balconies can still enjoy the wonderful South African weather to braai. Using your braai within close proximity to buildings and other apartments is not necessarily dangerous. Just make sure there are no combustible materials close by like canvas, shade cloth, curtains or thatch. Make use of the coal tray underneath the braai to catch the coals.

Of course, there is the al fresco dining alternative on balconies with cold meats and salads which are also an ideal way to spend time with family while saving on electricity costs.

If you live in flats with a lift – use the stairs. This not only saves a fortune of electricity for the building running and maintenance costs, but will ensure you get a bit of exercise every day.

49M has simplified energy efficiency to the extent where a whopping 28% of electricity can be saved with no cost involved through simple, every-day behavioral changes.

As with all homeowners, flat dwellers should know their number. You need to know where you currently are, and that’s where ‘Know Your Number’ comes in as your starting point.

This number is an energy rating and indicates your electricity use based on your property size. Click here to find out how to calculate your number.

Flat owners should set themselves a savings target of at least 25%.

Read the points below to find out how you can save by following these basic, no-cost tips:

  • Switch off lights that are not in use. Invest in LED lights, and you’ll save 350kWh per year.

  • Wash your hands with cold water instead of hot water. Installing a solar heater will save you a further 1898kWh a year.

  • Match your pot with the correct stove plate and keep the lid on to increase the cooking pressure.

  • Switching off your oven 15 minutes before removing your food will save you 182kWh per year. Cooking with a microwave is also more efficient than cooking with a stove.

  • Always keep your fridge door closed when you’re not using it, to avoid cold air escaping.

  • Avoid electricity wastage by only boiling as much water as you need at any given point.

  • Turn off the TV during dinner and spend time with your family instead.

  • Fold up clothes where possible, instead of ironing, and if you are ironing, start on clothes requiring the hottest setting.

  • Choose a front-loader washing machine over a top loader, and fill the machine to capacity.

  • Reduce your shower time to 7 minutes as this reduces your warm water use, reducing electricity.

  • Insulate your geyser to retain heat and switch it off during peak times (5pm – 9pm) using a geyser timer.
